Healing Through Perseverance: Margie’s Story

Margie’s before and after her first corrective surgery for her cleft lip.

We all have our motivations to push through life. Some people do it for family, others do it in the hope of a brighter future. These same things motivate the patients here at Tebow CURE Children’s Hospital. One inspiring child named Margie and her family are an example of that.

Margie, Evelyn’s fifth and youngest child, was born with a cleft lip and palate. “I gave birth at home, and when I saw my baby had a cleft, I was shocked because none of my other four children had the same condition. Then my husband gently told me that he had a distant relative who also had a cleft,” said Evelyn.

From the moment Margie was born, Evelyn struggled to feed her due to Margie’s lip and palate issues. Evelyn endured many sleepless nights as Margie cried, desperate for more milk. She used various methods, like putting milk on a medicine dropper, until Margie finally learned to drink milk from a feeding bottle. Due to the effect of the cleft,  Margie never really got enough food, and she ended up being severely underweight for much of her childhood.

As Margie got older, speech became another challenge. While her family eventually learned to understand her airy speech, others struggled to do so. Because of this, Margie started school later than most children her age. “Margie likes to go to school, even though she would often come home crying because her classmates bullied her,” Evelyn shared. Growing up underweight due to feeding difficulties, as well as struggling to be understood, Margie was an easy target for the local bullies.

Margie never received treatment for her cleft because her family lived in a remote mountainous area where development was slow. There were no nearby hospitals, and even the closest school was a one-hour walk away. Despite these hardships, Evelyn could not bear to see her daughter continue to suffer. She sought help from their district health center, where they were referred to Tebow CURE Children’s Hospital!

Margie and her mom arrived at Tebow CURE in April of 2025 for her admission. During her time with the hospital’s spiritual ministry team, Margie came to know Jesus and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour. Margie learned about God’s love through Jesus’ death on the cross. “Not only did Jesus die for us, but He is also our healer. There are many stories in the Bible about how Jesus heals people, and just like those stories, Jesus will also heal you,” said Child Mentor Lyra to Margie. Her first surgery was successful, closing the gaps in her lips, and she was excited to see the results of her fully healed lips.

A tender moment between Margie and her mother, Belen, during our home visit and interview with their family.

The Tebow CURE team had the privilege of visiting Margie at her home after she had healed from her cleft lip surgery. “I felt God’s presence. He saved Margie, and I am so grateful to God for it,” recalls Margie’s mother,  Belen. She also expressed her gratitude that God had answered her prayer for Margie through the help of those who assisted.

Margie is back for admission for her cleft palate surgery, and she brought an old photo of her from her preschool graduation before her surgery, saying, “I will look different in my next graduation photo”.

Four months after her cleft lip repair surgery, Margie was back at the hospital for her cleft palate surgery. Even though her surgery had to be delayed due to health complications, Margie still brought her positive disposition. She showed an old photo of herself from her preschool graduation, saying, “I will look different in my next graduation photo.” Margie is currently in the first grade, and she has expressed how much she wants to finish school to become a police officer, despite the bullying she faces due to her cleft condition.

Margie and Evelyn persevered against all the odds that held them back from getting treatment and following their dreams. They hope for healing through the surgeries, no matter how hard or how far along the journey or process, finding God’s love along the way. Margie has not received her cleft palate surgery, but we know God’s timing and plans are always perfect. We will wait and pray for Margie’s complete transformation and see her through the fruits of her faith and perseverance.
