The Boy Who Walked: Mack Earl’s Mobility Journey
“Lord, is this a blessing or a curse?” Mack Earl asked in one of his prayers.
Mack Earl is an only child born with a clubfoot on his left leg and the absence of a fibula bone in his right leg, causing his right leg to be shorter. When he was three years old, he was seen by a doctor for treatment of his clubfoot. However, because of the pain the treatment caused him, his family decided not to continue. Despite his condition, Mack Earl’s grandmother, Erlinda, recalled that he was a very active and sociable boy. But as he grew older, that began to change.
At 15, Mack Earl had spent his entire life walking on his knees. Over the years, deep callouses formed from constantly bearing his weight. As he entered his teenage years, he became increasingly self-conscious. “I was not shy before. Now that I am a teenager, I always feel insecure about what other people would think about me,” Mack Earl said. At school, classmates often approached him with questions about his condition.”They would often ask me what happened to my feet, and I would explain it to them. That’s how I made friends,” Mack Earl added.
Even with his cheerful disposition, he could not help but wonder why this had happened to him. “I am always motivated by the love of my family. But there are times when I asked the Lord if this was a blessing or a curse,” Mack Earl shared. “He told me it’s a gift, and He gave this to me because He knows I am strong enough to handle it. This is my destiny, so I have to make it my own,” he added.
Although his hope wavered at times, it was never extinguished. Mack Earl was determined to do whatever it took to walk properly and live a more independent life. His prayers were answered when their local government unit referred him to a Tebow CURE mobile clinic near his home. There, Mack Earl found renewed hope and a brighter vision for his future.
In November 2024, Mack Earl arrived for his first clinic appointment with Tebow CURE’s orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Eide. Together with his mother, Marivic, he learned more about his condition and the treatment options available to him. He admitted feeling both excited and afraid. Later that same month, Mack Earl underwent his first surgery to correct his left clubfoot. The procedure aimed to restore a more natural walking gait by permanently positioning his foot in a more balanced alignment. After months of healing and rehabilitation, he learned to bear weight on his left foot and took his first steps.
To further improve his mobility, Mack Earl later underwent a below-the-knee amputation of his underdeveloped right leg. During the procedure, the affected portion of the leg was removed below the knee joint, and the remaining tissue was carefully shaped and closed to prepare it for a future prosthetic fitting. After recovering from surgery, he was referred to the Davao Jubilee Foundation, Tebow CURE’s prosthetics partner, where he was fitted with a prosthetic leg.
After more than a year of treatment, Mack Earl can finally walk. “Before, I felt that people didn’t respect me, especially younger kids who looked down on me. But now that I can stand and walk, I feel respected,” he shared. Today, Mack Earl has returned to face-to-face classes and is now in Grade 10, where he continues to excel as one of the top students in his class. From kneeling, he is now standing, walking, and even dancing—filled with renewed confidence and hope.
“I am grateful to Dr. Eide, the entire Tebow CURE team, and the donor who made my surgery possible,” he expressed. For Marivic, watching her son experience life in ways he never could before has been nothing short of remarkable. “He can do whatever he wants. Before, he couldn’t walk, go to school, or be with us when we went out. Now he can confidently go out and be himself. He rode an airplane and a bus for the first time in his life. He was so amazed to be doing all these things,” Marivic shared. “We are so thankful to God for giving Mack Earl this opportunity of healing and finally achieving his dreams one by one,” she added.
Mack Earl’s journey is a powerful reminder that hope can flourish even in life’s most difficult circumstances.
