Tebow CURE Is Going the Distance to Help Kids Heal
Tebow CURE staff, the Zamboanga Sibugay provincial government unit, and the provincial social welfare and development team pose for a group photo with the mobile clinic patients.
Tebow CURE Children’s Hospital of the Philippines (Tebow CURE) has always had the mission of healing the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God. However, the hospital is making an intentional effort to bring this mission to the most vulnerable in the country by focusing on remote areas that need specialized medical care.
This intentional focus is mainly carried out through mobile clinics and memorandums of agreement (MOAs) with Local Government Units (LGU). In February 2025, these activities paved the way for Tebow CURE to reach Zamboanga Sibugay despite ongoing logistical issues because of the area’s distance from the hospital. This mobile clinic was a 16-hour journey (by land) and is one of Tebow CURE’s most far-reaching efforts to ensure every child in need of corrective surgery has access to care.
The Zamboanga peninsula occupies the western island of Mindanao. It comprises three provinces, one of which is Zamboanga Sibugay. With 16 municipalities, the province is known for its natural wonders and agricultural industry, richly producing rice, corn, coconut, and rubber.
Created in 2001, the province emerged as a promising tourism destination. However, the peninsula could not entirely escape from its history of violence and armed conflict, which hindered development, especially in the healthcare sector. This insecurity also made some international organizations hesitant to establish a regular presence and offer much-needed specialized services to the residents of Zamboanga.
Through intentionally made relationships and strategic partnerships with the provincial government, Tebow CURE has been able to enter the peninsula and begin offering care to children needlessly living with disabilities in the provinces.
Our staff, headed by Executive Director Peter Cowles and Deputy Director Dr. Fidelis Amparo, recently conducted a two-day mobile clinic in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay. The mobile clinic saw a total of 132 patients over the two days, and 111 patients were booked to come to the hospital.
These comprise about 10 percent of the projected patients Tebow CURE will serve in the coming months. Through further strategic partnerships, these 111 children will be transported to the hospital for life-changing surgery and ultimately be freed from the bonds of their disabilities! “Thank you so much to all those who arranged for this special day. Everyone has made this a special once-in-a-lifetime day for us because we have never been to Zamboanga Sibugay,” Peter Cowles shared in his speech. “We also appreciate our team, which has been here for so long, for two weeks now, screening cases and working with your groups as well.”
Raiba Abdua, Provincial PWD Federation President of Zamboanga Sibugay, happily shared that “it is encouraging to see that a window of opportunity has opened for them—Tebow CURE has opened a window for them. As long as people serve as bridges to ensure proper coordination—from the barangay level to the district and local government—everyone can work together to make this partnership with Tebow CURE successful.”
During the mobile screening, we met CUREkid Kenneth, a patient with multiple treatable conditions.
At the clinic, the Tebow CURE staff met a remarkable young man named Kenneth, a 13-year-old boy with multiple treatable conditions. Kenneth was born with a cleft lip and palate, a left clubfoot, and missing fingers and toes. Kenneth encountered many challenges growing up. Aside from feeding difficulties because he could not suck properly, his airy speech caused kids to laugh at him. Because of his clubfoot, walking was painful.
“I witnessed how my son struggled, but it was so painful to see every time he would compare his foot to his cousin’s and ask me why his foot was different from theirs. Sometimes, I don’t know how to answer him. I would tell him not to worry because his foot will be straight someday,” his mother, Ieken, solemnly shared.
Despite all these challenges, Kenneth grew up knowing who Jesus is. He never questioned why God allowed these things to happen. His mother constantly reminded him to continue worshipping God and strengthening his faith because God has better plans for him. Kenneth is an active part of their youth Bible study group at church. At school, he is top of his class. His conditions did not stop him! He is part of the basketball, volleyball, badminton, and chess teams that compete in school leagues. Kenneth never lost hope. And now, after the Zamboanga Sibugay mobile clinic, Kenneth has been connected with Tebow CURE, where his multiple conditions will be corrected, fulfilling the promises of his mother’s faith!
The first patients from Zamboanga Sibugay arrive at Tebow CURE.
Many stories like Kenneth’s come from Tebow CURE’s mobile clinics. The help of partners and donors fuels the hospital’s efforts to continually bridge distances so that more and more patients receive the help they need. The Zamboanga Sibugay mobile clinic is just one example of what strategic and intentional partnerships can do. The hospital has now welcomed the fourth batch of patients from Zamboanga Sibugay, and these children are receiving the life-transforming treatment they need!
